The UK government has formally approved the £750 million Marlow Film Studios development, clearing the way for one of the most significant new production hubs in the country. The decision overturns Buckinghamshire Council’s earlier rejection and follows a detailed public inquiry led by housing secretary Steve Reed. Reed concluded that the long-term economic benefits, including the creation of up to 4,000 jobs and substantial inward investment, clearly outweigh the impact on protected green-belt land.

The project will redevelop a 56-acre former quarry and landfill site on the edge of Marlow. Plans include eighteen purpose-built soundstages, large workshop facilities, flexible backlot space and a culture and skills academy designed to train both emerging and established talent. Supporters argue that the studio will significantly strengthen the UK’s position as a global centre for film and high-end television production at a time when demand for large, modern soundstage space continues to grow.

Among its most prominent champions is James Cameron, who has praised the studio’s potential to help shape the future of international filmmaking in Britain. His endorsement has been used by the project’s backers to underline the scale and ambition of the development.

Local campaign groups have remained firmly opposed, warning that the build will alter the landscape, increase traffic and encroach on green-belt land. Despite these objections, the government ruled that very special circumstances justify the project and that the wider economic and creative advantages outweigh the environmental concerns.

For the UK screen industry, the approval represents a major expansion of production capacity and a significant vote of confidence in the sector’s future. Marlow Film Studios is now positioned to attract some of the world’s largest productions and to play a central role in the next chapter of British filmmaking.
