The 82nd Venice International Film Festival is set to kick off on August 27th and run through to September 6th, 2025, offering an exciting mix of auteur-driven films, star-studded premieres, and politically resonant stories. This year’s lineup blends prestige and power, with major players from Hollywood and international cinema converging on the Lido for what is already being hailed as a high-impact festival season opener.

The festival will launch with ‘La Grazia’, a new drama from Italian director Paolo Sorrentino. Set in Naples and starring Toni Servillo alongside Anna Ferzetti, the film marks a return to the kind of intimate, elegant storytelling that made Sorrentino’s ‘The Great Beauty‘ a modern classic. From there, the competition expands into a wide-ranging slate of films that reflect both artistic ambition and commercial clout.

One of the most talked-about entries is Guillermo del Toro’s reinterpretation of ‘Frankenstein‘, a Netflix production featuring Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi. The streamer continues its strong presence in Venice, also backing Noah Baumbach’s ‘Jay Kelly‘, a drama led by George Clooney, Adam Sandler, and Laura Dern. Meanwhile, Yorgos Lanthimos returns with ‘Bugonia‘, a dark satire featuring Emma Stone in what promises to be another bold collaboration with the director of ‘Poor Things‘.

Benny Safdie makes his solo directorial debut in competition with ‘The Smashing Machine‘, a raw, physical biopic about MMA fighter Mark Kerr, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. Another high-profile title is Kathryn Bigelow’s ‘A House of Dynamite‘, a politically charged thriller about missile tensions starring Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson. Olivier Assayas will debut ‘The Wizard of the Kremlin‘, a drama with Jude Law portraying Vladimir Putin and Paul Dano in a key role as one of his close advisers. Jim Jarmusch brings ‘Father Mother Sister Brother‘, a moody anthology project starring Cate Blanchett, Adam Driver, and Tom Waits.

The international competition also includes entries from László Nemes and François Ozon, both bringing European perspective and depth with ‘Orphan‘ and ‘L’Étranger‘. South Korean director Park Chan-wook, whose previous films like ‘Decision to Leave‘ found acclaim at Cannes, now brings ‘No Other Choice’, adding further prestige and anticipation to the slate.

Among the most emotionally charged films this year is ‘The Voice of Hind Rajab‘, a documentary by Kaouther Ben Hania, based on the final emergency calls of a young Palestinian girl who died during the Israel-Gaza conflict. The film is expected to make a strong political statement while delivering deeply personal storytelling. Another notable entry, ‘Ann Lee‘ from Mona Fastvold, features Amanda Seyfried in a historical role that explores the life of the enigmatic leader of the Shakers.

Out of competition, the festival will host a series of high-profile premieres. Luca Guadagnino’s ‘After the Hunt‘ stars Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, and Ayo Edebiri in a psychological drama touching on themes of power and consent within academia. Julian Schnabel’s ‘In the Hand of Dante‘, a meta-fictional tale starring Al Pacino, Oscar Isaac, Martin Scorsese, and Gal Gadot, is set to be one of the festival’s buzziest titles. Other premieres include Gus Van Sant’s ‘Dead Man’s Wire‘, the Colombian musical drama ‘Barrio Triste’ featuring Bad Bunny, and new documentaries from acclaimed directors such as Sofia Coppola, Werner Herzog, and Laura Poitras.

This year’s main competition jury will be led by director Alexander Payne, known for his sharp humanistic storytelling. Lifetime achievement awards will be presented to Werner Herzog and Kim Novak, honoring their enduring contributions to the art of cinema.

As the industry looks toward the fall awards season, Venice continues to solidify its place as a critical launchpad. With an impressive mix of bold, timely, and artistically daring films, the 2025 edition is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in recent memory. The spotlight is on Venice once again, and all eyes are watching.
