The Punisher is back, and this time, he’s heading straight for the big screen.
Jon Bernthal, known for his raw, visceral take on Frank Castle, is officially joining Tom Holland in the upcoming Marvel film ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, as confirmed by Variety. This marks a major turning point for the character, who has so far existed on the fringes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Bernthal first appeared as the Punisher in season two of ‘Daredevil’, where his no-holds-barred performance earned critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase. He later starred in two seasons of ‘The Punisher’, a brutal and emotionally charged solo series that ran on Netflix from 2017 to 2019. Castle was last seen in the original Netflix continuity in full vigilante mode, but the character has since made a surprising return, more recently under the Marvel Studios banner, with Bernthal reprising the role in the upcoming series ‘Daredevil: Born Again’.
But next up in the crosshairs of Frank Castle, if the comic books are to be followed, is Spider-Man. In the comics, the relationship between Spider-Man and the Punisher has always been uneasy. Frank Castle was originally hired to kill the web-slinger before realising he was being manipulated.
Bringing that tension to the big screen opens the door for some of the darkest storytelling the MCU has tackled to date. With Castle’s brutal code and Peter Parker’s unwavering sense of morality on a collision course, ‘Brand New Day’ is shaping up to be more than just another sequel, it could redefine what a Spider-Man story looks like in this next phase of the MCU. We for one are excited.
