Will Ferrell is set to bring his 2020 Netflix comedy, ‘Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga‘, to the Broadway stage. Ferrell, who co-wrote and starred in the original film, is collaborating with Harper Steele and Broadway veteran Anthony King on the musical adaptation. The production will be directed by Alex Timbers, known for his work on the Tony-nominated musical ‘Just in Time’.
The film, which follows Icelandic singers Lars Erickssong and Sigrit Ericksdóttir as they pursue their dream of winning the Eurovision Song Contest, received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for ‘Husavik’. Ferrell, a longtime fan of the Eurovision competition, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “The stage musical is a perfect place to continue our celebration of all the things we love about this amazing and unifying song competition.”
While no official timeline has been announced for the Broadway debut, the creative team is actively developing the show. Ferrell’s recent projects include the documentary ‘Will & Harper‘ and the comedy ‘You’re Cordially Invited‘. He is currently filming ‘Judgment Day‘ alongside Zac Efron and Regina Hall.
Martin Green, director of the Eurovision Song Contest, expressed support for the adaptation, hoping it will further spread the joy of the competition as it approaches its 70th edition in 2026. The Eurovision Song Contest recently reached a global audience of 166 million viewers.
