However, the road to success is rarely smooth, and for many of the biggest names in Hollywood, rejection was not just an occasional setback—it was a constant companion.

These 5 actors below exemplify what it means to persevere through adversity, to simply keep going even when the world is telling you no, and prove that belief in oneself can eventually silence even the harshest critics.

1. Sylvester Stallone

Before ‘Rocky’ made him a household name, Sylvester Stallone was a struggling actor who could barely afford to eat. He was rejected countless times for roles due to his slurred speech and unconventional look. Stallone realised that in order to succeed in this harsh industry, he had to start creating his own opportunities.

When he wrote the script for ‘Rocky’ at the age of 30, studios offered to buy it but refused to cast him in the lead. Stallone stood firm—he would only sell the script if he could star in it. He even turned down an offer of $300,000 (the equivalent of $1m today), with only $106 in his bank account, so that he could ensure he played the part. Eventually, United Artists relented and agreed to allow him to star in the titular role. ‘Rocky’ went on to win Best Picture at the Oscars and launched Stallone’s enduring career.

2. Samuel L. Jackson

For over two decades, Samuel L. Jackson struggled with small roles in theatre and minor films, all while battling a severe drug addiction that nearly derailed his career entirely. After hitting rock bottom and completing rehab in 1991, he earned attention for his raw performance as a crack addict in ‘Jungle Fever’, but true fame remained out of reach.

That changed in 1994 when, at the age of 46, Jackson delivered a breakout performance as Jules Winnfield in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Pulp Fiction’, earning an Oscar nomination and capturing the world’s attention with his intense presence and unforgettable delivery. 3. Harrison Ford

5. Jim Carrey

Before becoming one of the highest-paid comedians in Hollywood, Jim Carrey faced an uphill battle. As a child, his family lived in a van, and he dropped out of school at aged 16 to help support them. When he decided to focus on comedy full time, he moved to LA, where he would park on Mulholland Drive every night and visualize his success. One of these nights he wrote himself a check for $10,000,000 for “Acting Services Rendered”, which he dated for Thanksgiving 1995.

However, early on in his career, he was rejected repeatedly by casting agents who found his style too bizarre and outlandish. But Carrey decided to lean into his uniqueness, and began landing roles in several TV and Film productions, before being cast in his breakthrough role in Ace Ventura at age 32 in 1994. That same year saw the release of ‘The Mask’ and ‘Dumb and Dumber’ where he hit his milestone target of $10,000,000 for “Acting Services Rendered”.
