A24 has released the first trailer for The Smashing Machine, offering a dramatic first look at Dwayne Johnson’s intense transformation into MMA pioneer Mark Kerr. The film marks a major departure from Johnson’s usual blockbuster roles, plunging into the dark, real-life story of addiction, fame, and the brutal world of early mixed martial arts.
Directed by Benny Safdie—one half of the duo behind Uncut Gems—this project is his solo directorial debut. The trailer teases a stripped-down, emotionally raw performance from Johnson, who is nearly unrecognizable in the role. Emily Blunt co-stars as Kerr’s wife, Dawn Staples, bringing added emotional weight to the story.
Inspired by the 2002 HBO documentary of the same name, The Smashing Machine aims for a gritty, realistic tone, and the trailer promises a character study that goes well beyond the octagon.
The Smashing Machine is set to hit theaters on October 3, 2025.
