Jesse Eisenberg is heading back behind the camera for his third feature film, and this time, he’s bringing music, mayhem, and an A-list cast along for the ride.
His newest project – a quirky, original musical comedy—is officially in the works at A24, and it’s already shaping up to be a showstopper.
Leading the ensemble cast are Oscar-winner Julianne Moore and the ever-versatile Paul Giamatti.
Today, it was announced by Variety, that joining the cast would be ‘The Little Mermaid’ star Halle Bailey, Havana Rose Liu, Bernadette Peters, Bonnie Milligan, Colton Ryan, Lilli Cooper, and Maulik Pancholy. Not too shabby for a small-town theatre tale.
The story follows a quiet, seemingly ordinary woman who winds up cast in an original community theatre musical. But what starts as a local production quickly spirals into something much more intense – especially once she falls under the spell of the show’s eccentric director. Cue the drama, the dancing, and (probably) some wildly catchy tunes.
Not only did Eisenberg write the screenplay, but he’s also composing original music for the film – yes, he’s going full triple threat. Filming kicked off in April, and A24 is officially on board to distribute.
Behind the scenes, the project is being produced by Topic Studios and Fruit Tree – the production company co-founded by Emma Stone, Dave McCary, and Ali Herting. This marks a reunion of sorts for Eisenberg and Fruit Tree and A24, who previously teamed up on his debut film, ‘When You Finish Saving the World’.
Coming off the success of ‘A Real Pain’, which earned two Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Screenplay, Eisenberg is keeping the momentum going – this time with show tunes.
