’The Residence’ is a Netflix murder-mystery series set within the White House, featuring Uzo Aduba as detective Cordelia Cupp. Produced by Shondaland and created by Paul William Davies, the show is inspired by Kate Andersen Brower’s book ‘The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House’.

The narrative unfolds as Cupp investigates the death of the White House’s chief usher during a state dinner, blending suspense with comedic elements.

Accompanying Aduba in ‘The Residence’ is a stellar ensemble cast, including Randall Park, known for ‘Fresh Off the Boat‘ and ‘WandaVision‘, Susan Kelechi Watson from ‘This Is Us‘ and ‘NCIS‘, Jason Lee, recognized for ‘My Name Is Earl‘ and ‘Almost Famous‘, and Ken Marino, who has starred in ‘Veronica Mars‘ and ‘Party Down‘. Together, they bring a dynamic mix of humor and intrigue to this White House whodunnit.

Not to forget Giancarlo Esposito, who is best known for his iconic roles in ‘Breaking Bad‘ and ‘The Mandalorian‘. Many fans may not know but Esposito has stepped into the role of A.B. Wynter in Netflix’s ‘The Residence,’ a character originally portrayed by the late Andre Braugher. Braugher, (Brooklyn Nine – Nine) known for his commanding screen presence, had filmed scenes for four of the show’s eight episodes before sadly passing away from lung cancer in December 2023. In taking over the role, Esposito has expressed his deep respect for Braugher’s legacy and the importance of honouring his work in the Shondaland-produced series.

Here’s a roundup of reviews from The Guardian, The Telegraph, IGN and Screen Rant.

  2. The Telegraph reports ‘The Residence’ as a “witty but overwrought” White House murder mystery. The review commends Uzo Aduba’s standout performance and highlights the inclusion of entertaining cameos, such as one from Kylie Minogue. However, it also notes that the series’ excessive use of profanity may detract from its overall appeal.
  3. IGN’s review of ‘The Residence’ highlights Uzo Aduba’s compelling portrayal of detective Cordelia Cupp in this White House-set murder mystery. The series offers an intriguing premise and a lavish setting but is criticized for convoluted storytelling and pacing issues.
