
The forthcoming West End revival of George Bernard Shaw’s ‘Mrs Warren’s Profession‘ has finalised its casting. Acclaimed actress Imelda Staunton will portray Mrs. Kitty Warren, starring alongside her real-life daughter, Bessie Carter, who will take on the role of Vivie Warren. This production marks the first time the mother-daughter duo will share the stage.
Imelda Staunton is a highly acclaimed British actress known for her work in film, television, and theatre. Most famous with younger audiences for her portrayal of Dolores Umbridge in ‘Harry Potter: and the Order of the Phoenix’ (2007), Staunton also delivered a powerhouse performance in the title role of ‘Vera Drake; (2004), earning her a BAFTA Award and an Academy Award nomination.
On stage, she has been celebrated for her performances in West End musicals, including her award-winning turns in ‘Gypsy’, ‘Sweeney Todd’, and ‘Follies’. More recently, she starred as Queen Elizabeth II in the final seasons of ‘The Crown’ (Netflix). Known for her versatility and commanding presence, Staunton remains one of the most respected actresses of her generation.
Directed by Dominic Cooke, known for his previous collaborations with Staunton on ‘Hello, Dolly!’ and ‘Follies’, the play delves into themes of societal hypocrisy and the corruption within the English class system. ‘Mrs. Warren’s Profession’ was notably banned for three decades due to its provocative content.
Joining Staunton and Carter are Kevin Doyle as Reverend Samuel Gardner, Robert Glenister as Sir George Crofts, Reuben Joseph as Frank Gardner, and Sid Sagar as Mr. Praed. The creative team includes designer Chloe Lamford, lighting designer Jon Clark, sound designer Christopher Shutt, and casting director Amy Ball.
Produced by Sonia Friedman, who previously collaborated with Staunton on ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’, the production is set to begin previews at London’s Garrick Theatre on May 10, 2025, officially opening on May 22, and running until August 16.
