After much speculation, Emmy Award-winning actor John Lithgow has confirmed he will portray Professor Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s upcoming ‘Harry Potter‘ TV series. Lithgow, known for his roles in ‘3rd Rock From The Sun,’ ‘Conclave‘, and ‘The Crown‘, expressed excitement about taking on this iconic character, acknowledging that it will define the final chapter of his career.

The first actor to bring Dumbledore to life on screen was Irish actor Richard Harris, who played the Hogwarts headmaster in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001) and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002). Harris portrayed Dumbledore as a wise, gentle, and grandfatherly figure, embodying the book’s descriptions of him. Unfortunately, Harris passed away in 2002 after a battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, leading to a recasting of the role.

Following Harris’s passing, Irish/English actor Michael Gambon took over the role of Dumbledore from ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban‘ (2004) onwards. Gambon’s portrayal diverged from Harris’s, introducing a more energetic, at times brash, interpretation of the character. While he maintained Dumbledore’s intelligence and authority, his version often displayed a fiery intensity, particularly in emotional or action-driven scenes. Though Gambon continued acting beyond ‘Harry Potter’, health issues, including memory loss, led him to step away from the spotlight in his later years. He passed away in 2023, at age 82 with his family by his side. His passing deeply moved Harry Potter fans, who honoured his portrayal of Dumbledore with heartfelt tributes and reflections on his impact on the beloved series.

This casting marks a significant departure from the original film series, which exclusively featured British and Irish actors in major roles. It was rumoured previously that casting would feature more American actors, which raised many questions. Dumbledore’s accent in the original film series was a blend of Irish and English, so it will be interesting to see what approach Lithgow takes. Whatever his choice, it will undoubtedly spark conversations amongst fans.

One thing is certain—John Lithgow is a seasoned actor whose talent and dedication to his craft are beyond question. With a career spanning decades and a track record of delivering compelling, nuanced performances, he has consistently demonstrated his ability to bring depth and authenticity to every role he takes on.
