The Bond series was originally launched by Albert “Cubby” Broccoli in 1962 before being taken over by his daughter and stepson. But going forward the Broccoli family will no longer oversee the James Bond film franchise, as long-time producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson announced they are stepping down.

Creative control will now shift from EON Productions to Amazon MGM Studios (formed after Amazon’s acquisition of MGM in 2022 for $8.45bn).

This move follows growing speculation about the future of the British spy, four years after ‘No Time to Die‘, which marked Daniel Craig’s final performance as Bond and the end of his tenure in the role.

Amazon will now choose the actor to replace Craig, however, there is no set timeline for the casting or the release of the next film.

Tom Hardy, James Norton, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Theo James are among the frontrunners to take on the iconic role.

But not only that, The US giant may commission additional streaming spin-offs, similar to how Disney+ has expanded the Star Wars franchise.

Thursday’s deal helps clarify why there has been such a long wait without any news regarding the 26th official Bond film or its lead actor.

Although audiences may be happy to know the next Bond is on the way, given the time needed to create a film of this magnitude, the delay between ‘No Time to Die’ and the next film could exceed the six-year record – the longest gap between Bond releases.

Amazon taking over the Bond franchise is definitely a significant shift, and it could bring both exciting opportunities and potential risks. On the one hand, Amazon has the resources and vision to push the franchise in new directions.

However, there’s also the possibility that the focus on expanding the brand could dilute its legacy. The unique, high-stakes appeal of Bond films has always been tied to their cinematic scope and sense of exclusivity. If too many side projects or spin-offs start popping up, it could risk overexposing the character and the world Bond inhabits.
