‘Severance’ is a psychological thriller and workplace drama series that centres on a group of employees at a mysterious company called ‘Lumon Industries’. The employees undergo a procedure known as “severance,” which surgically divides their memories into two distinct selves: one that exists during work hours and one that exists outside of them.

Season 1 premiered to hugely positive reviews and a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, in February 2022. Starring Adam Scott and directed by Ben Stiller, the first two episodes of ‘Severance’ season 2 are now available on Apple TV

  1. The Guardian: Praises the show’s cleverness and boldness, noting the complex, dystopian world-building and character development. ‘The first series was fantastically stylish, clever, trippy and compelling. The second is even more so”. It is lauded for maintaining its intrigue while deepening the emotional stakes, with a particular focus on the tension between personal and work lives. The series’ exploration of corporate control and identity remains a standout.
  2. Empire: Hails the second season as a masterful continuation of the first, calling it even more thrilling and intricate. The review emphasises the show’s visual style and credits showrunner Dan Erickson and Director Ben Stiller for creating such a unique atmosphere. The pacing and gradual unravelling of mysteries are also highlighted as key strengths, with Empire noting the darker, more philosophical themes explored.
  3. The Independent: Calls ‘Severance’ season 2 ”strange, stylish and totally engrossing”. The review applauds the inventive storytelling and psychological depth. The second season is described as a gripping, thought-provoking continuation that expands on the world of work-life separation, with a stronger emphasis on emotional conflict and the ethical dilemmas it raises. It is seen as a worthy successor to its first season, continuing to engage viewers with its unique premise.
  4. BBC: Celebrated the show for it’s continued brilliance, building on the tension and mystery established in the first season. The review highlights the clever writing, which blends dark satire with psychological drama, and commends the show’s ability to delve deeper into its dystopian premise. The second season is described as a masterclass in suspense, with sharp social commentary and a growing emotional depth.

Overall, the reviews are once again hugely positive for the Apple show and absolutely worth the 3 year wait for season 2. Although audiences have only been given the first two episodes of the season, it’s easy to see that the show is continuing to build on its unique premise and darkly intriguing atmosphere.
