First reported by Reuters on 22nd January 2025.

Netflix experienced a significant surge in its stock value, climbing 14.3% in early trading sessions on Wednesday. This uptick followed the company’s announcement of a record-breaking addition of 18.9 million subscribers during the holiday quarter. In response to this growth, Netflix plans to implement price increases across several countries, including the U.S., Canada, Portugal, and Argentina. The company’s shares had previously risen by 10% in after-hours trading on Tuesday, after closing with a 1.35% gain during regular trading hours.

The impressive subscriber growth is attributed to Netflix’s strategic focus on live sporting events and the return of popular series. Notably, the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson boxing match which became the platform’s most-streamed sporting event, and the second season of ‘Squid Game’ is on track to become one of its most-watched original series. Analyst Paolo Pescatore of PP Foresight commented, “Netflix reaffirms its leadership position and is absolutely running away in the streaming market.”

To support its expanding content offerings, Netflix is increasing prices for most service plans in the aforementioned countries. In the U.S., the basic service with ads will see a $1 monthly increase to $7.99, a 14% hike, while the premium package will rise to $24.99, up 9% from current pricing.

Investors have responded positively to these developments, with Netflix’s stock surging about 13% in extended trading, boosting its market value by nearly $50 billion. Over the past year, Netflix shares have gained more than 77%, outpacing the S&P 500’s 24% rise.

Looking ahead, Netflix plans to deliver more live events, including weekly installments of WWE ‘Monday Night Raw’ wrestling, and films such as ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’ starring Daniel Craig as detective Benoit Blanc, and ‘Frankenstein’ from Academy Award-winning director Guillermo del Toro. The company has also secured rights for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2027 and 2031, illustrating its strategy to deliver special-events programming rather than regular season sports packages.

Live events are a key component of Netflix’s advertising strategy, attracting brand marketers. The ad-supported version of its service accounts for 55% of new sign-ups in countries where it is available. Macquarie Equity Research analyst Tim Nollen predicts that ad revenue will increase to $2 billion this year as more people sign up for the company’s advertising-supported tier and Netflix’s advertising technology matures.

Netflix enters 2025 with strong momentum, having added a record 41 million subscribers in 2024 and re-accelerated growth. The company revised its guidance, projecting revenue of $43.5 billion to $44.5 billion in 2025.

This positive growth shows that Netflix is dominating in terms of market share compared to the other streamers, and we can’t wait to see some of the original content they will be producing and casting over the next few years.
