Starting March 4, 2025, the Broadway production of ‘Wicked’ will welcome a new set of leading actors to the roles of the two witches. Lencia Kebede has been announced as the new Elphaba, while Allie Trimm will step into the role of Glinda full-time. Both actors bring impressive credentials to the production.  

Lencia Kebede’s casting as Elphaba is especially groundbreaking. She is set to become the first Black actor to take on the role as a full-time principal in the Broadway production of ‘Wicked’. While there have been understudies and temporary covers of Black heritage who have portrayed Elphaba in the past (including Saycon Sengbloh, Lilli Cooper, and Brandi Chavonne Massey) Kebede is the first to hold the role as a primary cast member. Lencia Kebede is no stranger to major roles, having previously appeared in the Broadway production of ‘Hamilton’ and earning accolades for her powerful performances. Her portrayal of Elphaba is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the character, combining her commanding stage presence and vocal prowess to bring the ‘green girl’ to life in new and exciting ways. We certainly can’t wait to see her ‘defying gravity’.

Allie Trimm, who has been serving as the standby for Glinda since December 2021, will now officially step into the spotlight as the bubbly, ambitious ‘Good Witch’. Trimm’s work as a standby has made her a familiar face to many ‘Wicked’ fans, and audiences can now look forward to seeing her fully embrace the character of Glinda in a full time capacity.

The current leads, Mary Kate Morrisey as Elphaba and Alexandra Socha as Glinda, will give their final performances on March 2, 2025. Their contributions to the production have been praised, and their performances will no doubt be celebrated as they pass the torch to the new cast.  

‘Wicked’ is a cultural phenomenon that continues to captivate audiences more than two decades after its debut. Having celebrated its 20th anniversary in October 2023, it is now the fourth longest-running show in Broadway history. Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel, the musical reimagines the world of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ through the lens of Elphaba and Glinda, exploring themes of friendship, identity, and the complexities of good and evil. With a score by Stephen Schwartz, a book by Winnie Holzman, direction by Joe Mantello, and musical staging by Wayne Cilento, ‘Wicked’ remains a theatrical masterpiece that draws crowds from around the world.
