With so many great TV shows available these days, it’s easy to overlook some truly exceptional ones. The sheer volume of content across various streaming platforms can be overwhelming, making it difficult to keep track of everything worth watching. Step forward,‘Arcane’.

The series follows the story of two sisters, Vi and Jinx, whose lives are dramatically altered by the tensions between the cities of Piltover and Zaun. The show delves into their troubled past, their evolving relationship, and the events that lead to Jinx’s transformation from a playful, innocent younger sister into a chaotic and destructive force.

This show caught me by surprise. It is dark, dramatic, emotional, thought-provoking, beautiful, cinematic, gripping… and please feel free to add any additional adjectives in the thread below to describe this show. Hats off to the animators, ‘Arcane’ is absolutely beautiful, we are immediately immersed right from the start in the world they have created. Their use of shadows, colour, light is masterful, enhancing the emotional depth of every scene. The vibrant, yet often muted tones reflect the contrasts between Piltover’s sleek, high-tech cityscape and Zaun’s gritty, industrial underbelly. Each frame feels like a meticulously crafted painting. 

Music plays a huge role in this series. I have seen it in the past where a director will use high-profile artists to, perhaps, mask a show’s shortcomings. So I was weary about the use of music in ‘Arcane’. But wow was I wrong! Every music number adds to the already rich direction of the scene. Imagine Dragons, Twenty-One Pilots, Stromae, Linkin Park, to name a few that feature. Needless to say, they have all been added to the Spotify playlist.

Now sadly, the show is confirmed to end after season 2, which is a disappointing revelation for fans.

But we can’t help but respect the showrunners’ decision. They created a story with purpose and vision, and told it beautifully from start to finish, without dragging things out unnecessarily. This commitment to delivering a cohesive and well-rounded narrative, rather than extending the show beyond its natural conclusion, is something rare in modern television. That being said, ‘Arcane’ is undoubtedly rewatchable. But if you are one of the lucky few who have yet to stumble upon this show, do so now, and revel in every second of this masterpiece.
